Heart of Obsidian

Title: Heart of Obsidian
Series: Psy-Changeling #12
Author: Nalini Singh
Published: Berkley, June 4, 2013
Pages: 369
Genre: Paranormal Romance

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid.
The day of reckoning is here.

This was a tough one. So good. But I love a morally gray hero and Machiavellian machinations. First things first thought, check your trigger warnings. This book centers around Kaleb, who grew under the abusive tutelage of a serial killer, and Sahara, who was abducted and has been held for the last 7 years. You do see some graphic flashbacks, and some graphic terror attacks. It was hard to get through, even though I wouldn't call them triggers for myself, necessarily.

Of all of the cool things about Sahara, her language skill was the absolute coolest. This power is high school aged Kristen's absolute dream! She could hear a native speaker for less than a minute, and would be able to fully understand, speak, and translate the language. Are you kidding me?! Incredible, give it to me now, please! It's my Christmas wish, Santa.

I thought it was really neat the way that Sahara protected her mind while she was being held by her abductors. She called it a labyrinth. And she hid all of the important parts of herself and her power in the labyrinth. And she did have the language skill, but she also had backsight. So it was pretty neat to watch her recover memories through a mix of her backsight ability, and her own lived memory. Though the closer her memories got to being abducted, the more graphic they were. So the harder they were to read about.

Ultimately, Sahara is a badass. And Kaleb is the lucky man who got to save her.
