There are no tides more treacherous than those of the heart. —Teek saying

The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent.

The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?

As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.

And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?

I am so enthralled with the world building in this series. The magic system and religion are so at odds, and yet they're so tied together. It's very interesting to see the characters overcome their own preconceptions to step into their power.

While I don't know that I would have made it through reading this book on paper, I do think I'm missing something with the audio books. I would like to make an informal request for a pdf download glossary for help with spelling and keeping all of the characters straight in my head! Pretty please. Though having the large cast audio structure does REALLY help with knowing the characters!!

The narrative is so intricate. We've got a ton of political intrigue and every single person has ulterior motives that are known and unknown to the reader. In Black Sun, we got to really know these characters and (at least some of) their motivations. In Fevered Star, we see that the initial motivations are gone. This aim that Serapio has been raised for his entire life didn't work, but his god has abandoned him with a festering wound. Meanwhile, Naranpa survived the attempt on her life and is growing daily in her sun powers. Xiala is caught up in the machinations of spies and a coup that's been planned with Serapio's enemies leading the front.

We learned a lot about the duplicity and deceit that reign in The Meridian. But ultimately, this read like a stepping stone. So many story lines were introduced, and I am really looking forward to seeing how everything works out in the next book!
